"We've been building cooperation in forest management since long ago," Mr. Traavik said in a national seminar at Sari Pan Pacific Hotel, Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 3.

The cooperation is aimed at encouraging the government and citizens to run programs that can mitigate the impact of climate changes and to protect the environment. The programs are also aimed at alleviating poverty through public access to natural resources.

"For instance, the government must involve indigenous communities in utilizing and managing natural resources," he added.

Partnership executive director Monica Tanuhandari said that with supports from Norway, multi-party cooperation has been established in order to improve forestry governance and fair benefits for stakeholders, as well as forest resources sustainability. The program is realized through cooperation between 100 NGOs, communities and government organizations.

In addition, the results of the partnership have resulted in better policy and regulations, such as strategic initiatives to resolve land conflict in forest areas set forth in Environment Minister Regulation No. 32/2015 on forest rights.
