the Second Regional Workshop on Strategic Forestry Cooperation in Greater Central Asia

Overview

Greater Central Asia region generally includes Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrghyzstan, and also extends into part of Mongolia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China.

This region is endowed with rich and diverse natural resources, and is deemed as social and economic, cultural and ideological connections between East and West, South and North, between Europe and Asia. Currently this region is undergoing transition towards market economy and sustainable management mode, and draws increasing attentions form neighboring economies and beyond.

Forests of this region are considered as national resources of great importance in terms of environmental services. Under this scenario, it’s critical for economies in this region to collaborate and cope with common issues of the forest sector and establish a regional forestry cooperation strategy.

Based on the consensus reached during the 1st Regional Workshop on Strategic Forestry Cooperation in Central Asia, Beijing, China, 23–26 September 2014, Ministry of Environment and Green Development and Tourism of Mongolia (MEGDTM) and Mongolian nature and Environment consortium(MNEC) together with Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet) will convene the 2nd Second Regional Workshop in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia during 15-17 July 2015 to substantiate forestry cooperation in the region of Greater Central Asia.

Objectives

  • discuss current status, developing trends and constraints of forestry management;
  • exchange information and experiences on forest fire prevention, combating desertification and sand industry development and rural livelihood improvement;
  • discuss action plans of the activities proposed in Strategic Framework for Regional Cooperation, namely capacity building, demonstration projects, Ministerial Meeting Responsible for Forestry in Greater Central Asia and Regional Workshop on Strategic Forestry Cooperation in Greater Central Asia.

Expected outputs

  • Reports on current status, developing trends and constraints of forestry management in Greater Central Asia region;
  • Summary of best practices on forest fire prevention, combating desertification, sand industry development and rural livelihood improvement in Greater Central Asia region;
  • Action plans of the activities proposed in Strategic Framework for Regional Cooperation.

Organizers

Ministry of Environment and Green Development and Tourism of Mongolia (MEGDTM), Mongolian nature and Environment consortium(MNEC) and Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet).

Potential Participants

Officials and experts from forestry authorities of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrghyzstan, Mongolia and China, as well as invited speakers from international organization and Non-government Organization (NGOs) in this region will be invited to attend the workshop.

A maximum of 3 persons of each economy will be sponsored to attend the Workshop. Additionally, 4 international experts and 3 representatives from regional NOGs will be invited to attend the Workshop.

Working language

English is working language at the workshop.

Venue and Date

The workshop will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, 15-17 July, 2015. Provisional agenda is attached herein for your information.

Materials and information to be shared

The participants are required to make a 15-minute PPT presentation in English only at the meeting. Relevant written materials need to be sent to APFNet Secretariat 15 days ahead of the meeting.

Funding Mechanism

Necessary expenses occurred for the invited guests, including economic class return air tickets, accommodation and local transportation, will be covered by APFNet Secretariat.
