The overall goal of this project is to maximize biodiversity conservation and strengthen the urban forestry program through a demonstration site and learning center establishment including ecotourism promotion and benefits flowing to local communities.
To establish a demonstration and learning site for interested groups and visitors.
To develop and promote biodiversity conservation which will increase the number of visitors as well as the income flow to the local people.
To maximize the potential of the area as an ecotourism attraction by improving the habitat for dependent flora and fauna species.
Establishment of demonstration and learning site for interested groups and visitors
Establishment of biodiversity conservation area and development of this through ecotourism channels to achieve an increase in visitor numbers as well as in the flow of income benefiting local people
Maximizing the site’s ecotourism potential by improving the area’s habitat of dependent flora and fauna
Increasing public outreach through developing project information
The project successfully established Bang Kachao as a model urban forestry demonstration site, achieving significant biodiversity conservation and community engagement. Key outcomes include the creation of an exhibition/interpretative center and community-based ecotourism programs, which increased visitor numbers and generated local income (e.g., day tours priced at 850 THB, overnight stays at 1,800 THB). Educational initiatives, such as a nature-focused curriculum for schoolchildren and a biodiversity cartoon guidebook, enhanced environmental awareness among youth. Ecotourism infrastructure, including bamboo boardwalks and bird-watching sites, improved habitats for 49 bird species and 47 plant species. The project empowered local communities, particularly a women’s working group, to lead conservation efforts and develop sustainable income streams through handmade products and guided tours. Despite delays from Thailand’s National Procurement Act, the project adapted by narrowing its scope, avoiding overlap with other initiatives, and extending its timeline. Overall, it strengthened biodiversity, boosted local economies, and fostered long-term conservation stewardship.
