Goal

Establish comprehensive demonstration sites to demonstrate techniques for sand prevention and control; vegetation restoration and management; and utilization of forest resources in Greater Central Asia.

Objectives

To restore vegetation on sandy lands by employing advanced and mature technologies aimed at increasing vegetation cover, enhancing the quality of sandy land ecosystems, and fostering sustainable forest management to mitigate global climate changes, control desertification, and improve the ecological environment and living standards of local people.

Expected outputs

Research report outlining typical models for desertification prevention and control in Chifeng.

Establish 70 ha vegetation restoration demonstration forest in sandy areas.

Establish 39 ha economic forest demonstration site in sandy areas.

Capacity building and training of 500 people.

Domestic and international exchange and training for 20 people.

Compile a project technical training manual.

Impacts and Outcomes

The project has made significant strides in addressing desertification, enhancing local economic opportunities, and developing sustainable agricultural practices in Inner Mongolia. By establishing 70 hectares of vegetation restoration and 39 hectares of economic forest, the project has successfully implemented a variety of physical, chemical, and combined restoration models that have proven effective in combating the severe desertification affecting the region. These innovative models not only stabilize the soil and reduce sandstorm occurrences but also improve the microclimate and biodiversity of the area.

The project’s focus on local non-timber forest products, particularly the cultivation of yellowhorn and traditional fruits like apricots and Armenian plums, has revitalized local agriculture by introducing improved agricultural practices that have significantly increased yields and fruiting rates. Yellowhorn, known for its high economic value due to its oil-rich seeds, represents a particularly successful aspect of the project, showing great potential for commercialization which could provide substantial economic benefits to local communities.

Overall, this project has not only mitigated the effects of desertification in Aohan Banner but has also set a precedent for integrating ecological restoration with economic development, thereby improving the livelihoods of local communities while enhancing the regional environment.
